Using repurposed materials, imagery, and text, I create new contexts for old objects. More specifically, I incorporate crafting materials, holiday decorations, secondhand furniture, hardware store purchases, school supplies, comic books, used clothing, and household objects into installations—materials that act as social signifiers of working and middle class lifestyles.
I enjoy using vernacular techniques like rug hooking in the studio, as they connect me to my early creative experiences growing up in rural Nova Scotia and to a family history of skilled and passionate hobbyists. My practice is also influenced by my previous role as a public high school teacher, my current position as a cultural worker, and a lifetime of being an avid collector.
